Spike
(this skill will be explained for the right handed hitter; the exact opposite is true
for the left handed hitter)
- Player begins with the hitting foot slightly in front of the non hitting foot,
arms should be extended out in front of the body.
- Player should begin by taking a step with the left foot and drive the arms back directly
behind the body.
- The next step should be taken with the right foot. This step will be large and will be
used to place the player in the correct position in relation to the ball. As the player
takes this step he/she should begin to drive the arms forward in order to generate power
to be used in contacting the ball.
- The third step of the approach is with the left foot and is used to balance the player
upon contacting the ball. The arms should then be propelled upwards on completion of this
step. The player then uses the momentum generated by the approach to jump upwards towards
the ball.
