Block

  • The blocker begins with his/her feet shoulder width apart and parallel. Hands should be held shoulder height with the palms facing the net.
  • When preparing to block the ball the player should first see the player who is about to spike the ball on the opposite side of the net.
  • The blocker must then move laterally, left or right, to place themselves in front of the attacking player.
  • Once identifying the placement of the player the blocker must then identify the placement of the ball.
  • When the blocker has determined where both the attacking player and the ball will be positioned the blocker must then attempt to judge the speed at which the attack will take place.
  •  The blocker must then jump directly up and down with his/her arms extended above their head with the ball contacting the palms of the hand on contact.
  • When the ball contacts the hands of the blocker, the player must then tighten the shoulder and stomach muscles in order to force the ball back over the net.
