 Religion has influenced art throughout history. Many of the world's greatest works of art are examples of religious art. For instance, Michelangelo's painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel is a piece of spiritual art which is recognized worldwide. As well, Buddhist sculptures are impressive specimens of artistic religious expression which are distinct symbols of the Buddhist faith. Religious art can take many forms, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, monuments, and stained glass. These works of art are expressions of faith for the artists who conceive and create them. Religious art is a compelling and easily accessible means by which religious communities can express the beliefs and truths held by their particular religion. As a religious symbol, religious art can embody abstract concepts that would require volumes of written material to be adequately articulated. Students in the World Religions 3104 class at Holy Spirit High completed an assignment in which they explored religious art in Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam. The students were asked to find pieces of religious art with which they were to include relevant information such as, the artist, date, medium, symbolism, purpose, and importance of the art they discovered.
